How to stay safe from telephone or tablet fraud while on holiday

 23.08.2016

The National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications of Romania (ANCOM) advises tablet and smartphone users travelling in the country and abroad to take additional precautions in order to prevent fraud or unauthorised access to their terminals, and to minimize the damage extent in case of terminal loss or theft.
Take precautions!
You should take some preventive measures to avoid unauthorised users’ accessing your tablet or telephone terminal, such as:
ü lock your SIM card by a complex PIN code
ü set your terminal to automatically lock after a minimum idle timeout
ü set a password for unlocking the equipment
ü install a trusted antivirus software and set it to update and scan the equipment periodically
ü keep the security options configured by your equipment manufacturer
ü periodically update the installed applications and the operating system.
Has your terminal been stolen?
If your telephone has been stolen, you can avoid unwanted voice and data consumption by requesting your telephony provider to temporarily interrupt service provision to the respective number. Subsequently, the provider will issue a new SIM card.
Prior to leaving on holiday, you should write down the telephone numbers where you could call to notify your provider in case of terminal theft. Remember: telecom operators cannot lock your smartphone, nor your tablet. All they can do is lock your SIM card, whereas the equipment recovery is to be handled by the police, upon receiving your complaint.
Moreover, some applications have been devised to track the lost/stolen smartphone or tablet and to delete the data from the memory of unrecoverable equipment, as well as to make a backup copy of the contacts and data in your telephone.
