EU Roaming Costs, This Summer

30.06.2015

Those of us who travel in the European Union this summer using mobile telephony and internet services in roaming based on a basic tariff plan (Eurotariff) will pay maximum 0.19 euro/minute (without VAT) for an outgoing call, 0.05 euro/minute (without VAT) for an incoming call and maximum 0.06 euro (without VAT) for sending a text message (SMS). For internet access services, such travellers will be charged maximum 0.20 euro/MB (without VAT). For journeys outside the EU, ANCOM recommends the users to check the tariffs set by each operator for the countries they are going to visit, some of these being a lot higher than the ones regulated in the Community area.
Although EU talks on the removal of roaming tariffs are in progress, the Romanian users should know that – currently – roaming tariff ceilings are regulated within the Union, as the limits the operators have the obligation to observe, as regards the basic tariff plan (Eurotariff). The operators can make available to their customers lower tariffs or other tariff plans, such as the ones under the special holiday offerings. Therefore, the users should carefully read their providers’ offerings  before leaving on holiday, in order to choose the tariff plan that best suits their communication needs. For a comparative view of all the telephony and internet tariffs in the market at the moment, ANCOM has made available the telecom tariff comparison tool, at the address www.veritel.ro.
The latest ANCOM statistics show that, once with the regulated cut down of EU roaming tariffs, applicable from 1 July 2014, voice traffic in roaming grew by 53% in 2014, up to 647 million minutes (of which, 196 million were outgoing and 451 million – incoming calls), whereas the outgoing SMS traffic grew by 10% year-on-year, up to 123 million text messages. The average duration of an outgoing call in roaming was 2 minutes and 24 seconds, whereas the average duration of an incoming call was 3 minutes and 16 seconds. Moreover, the consumption of data in roaming grew significantly, almost 6 times, from 34 thousand GB in 2013 to 202 thousand GB in 2014.
Further information on the use and costs of the roaming service are available in the Authority’s website, here.
