Riding the (RADIO)waves of change

On 26 September 2016, the National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications of Romania (ANCOM) is organising a new edition of its annual international conference, this year entitled “Riding the (RADIO) waves of change”. The event will take place at Radisson Blu Hotel in Bucharest, starting 9.00.

This year’s conference is dedicated to a double anniversary – ANCOM celebrates 25 years of modern spectrum management and 150 years of membership to the International Telecommunication Union. Such anniversaries are good occasions to look back at what has been achieved in the spectrum management field, at what we propose to do next, but they are also a perfect time to debate current trends and challenges, while advocating the benefits of the telecom sector for our everyday lives and the role of regulators in the more and more complex landscape of today’s telecoms.

Under the theme “Riding the (RADIO) waves of change”, the conference will explore two topical issues at international level - communications in emergency situations and dynamic spectrum access (DSA). As the world evolves, so are the challenges a telecom regulator must face. The increasing need for services and applications triggers the need to effectively address the scarcity of radio spectrum, while communications networks are expected to ensure minimal communications services during emergency situations.

The event is structured into three sessions, the first of them being dedicated to the double anniversary mentioned above, while the second session will focus on concrete examples on how the communications functioned in emergency situations and on what it has been done in order to improve the reaction of both authorities and operators in such situations. The third session of the conference is intended as a debate on the concept of DSA, as a spectrum sharing alternative that could prove more efficient both for service providers and for regulatory bodies, and could help them avoid any artificial scarcity, by exploring the for and against reasons to adopt such a method.

Participation in the audience is free of charge, based on invitation and upon on-line registration. Seats are limited and will be occupied in order of registration.
