Fraud and security

Technological development enables us to use increasingly sophisticated equipment, with an ever-growing number of functionalities each day. We use them to make calls, send and receive SMS and go online.

Wherever you may be, smartphones and tablets enable us to access your e-mail, to use the socialization networks and a huge number of useful or entertaining applications. But the very revolutionary communication possibilities may also carry increased security risks.

Therefore, take some precautions:
·         Do not use the pre-set PIN code! Personalize it and do not disclose it to anyone!
·         Set a password for the screen, too;
·         You could bar certain calling directions (for example, international calls);
·         Do not change the security options configured by the manufacturer - this could make the terminal vulnerable to virus attacks;
·         Install an original antivirus programme;
·         If you intend to connect your terminal to a computer, make sure that the latter is also protected by a firewall and an antivirus programme;
·         Download applications only from the online shops owned or recommended by manufacturers, and read the users’ opinion on them. Certain applications may seem authentic, though contain programmes that could enable a hacker to acquire remote access to your smartphone and to the personal data stored in it, to make calls, send SMS or download online content without you being aware of that;
·         Install a phone tracking application in case your smartphone is stolen or lost. Moreover, there are applications for remotely deleting data from the memory of a missing device (such as pictures, contacts etc.);
·         If your telephone is missing, address your telephony provider to temporarily suspend the number as soon as possible;
·         Allow the download of new software versions of the operation system, as they may be better developed to protect you from viruses or other security vulnerabilities.
·         Before throwing or giving away the telephone, delete all the personal data stored.

You may be the victim of a fraud attempt as well when you receive a call/SMS requesting, for various reasons, to send an SMS/dial a telephone code/convey certain personal data.

May they seem to be coming from your telephony operator or from major companies, these communications are in fact fraud attempts, for the purpose of obtaining illegal gains and are initiated by malevolent persons.

The pretext of such a request may be:
- winning a prize/taking part in certain promotions;
- checking the operation of the telephony service or of the related services;
- checking payments to the telephony operator.

What is really going on?
Most often, if you obey such a request, you top-up or transfer credit on the cards of unknown persons, who take advantage of this situation.

What can you do?
If you have already obeyed such a request, address your telephony operator or the police at once, in order to have an investigation initiated.

WARNING!!! Usually, your provider can bar the telephone number in favour of which the top-up or transfer has been performed, but the lost amount may remain unrecoverable until the end of investigations.

ANCOM cannot step in in such situations.
