09.04.2019

At the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum held in Geneva, from 8 to 12 April 2019, ANCOM’s President Sorin Grindeanu handed to the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Houlin Zhao, the official letter by which Romania announces its availability to organize the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2022 (PP-22). The host country for PP-22 will be appointed at the ITU Council, to be held in Geneva from 10 to 20 June 2019. The Memorandum for Romania’s candidacy was approved in Government session on 4 April 2019.

"In November, when we launched the idea that Romania could host the most important meeting of the International Telecommunication Union in 2022, it seemed an impossible project. After several months of efforts and negotiations, with the support of my colleagues in MCSI and MAE, today I have had the honour to hand in to the Secretary-General of the ITU the letter by which Romania officially announces its candidacy for hosting the Plenipotentiary Conference in 2022. ITU’s favourable answer to our candidacy would mean the chance to place Romania at the forefront of the debates on the future of IT&C, "said Sorin Grindeanu, President of ANCOM.

ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2022
According to the ITU Constitution, the Plenipotentiary Conference is the supreme decision-making body of the Union and has the role of adopting ITU's overall policy, strategic and financial plans and choosing its leadership (the ITU Council as mandated by the Plenipotentiary Conference, the Secretary-General, the Director of the Radiocommunications Office, the Director of the Standardization Bureau, the Director of the Development Bureau). During this event, the future of the organization as a whole is decided, as well as its ability to influence various IT&C related trends, such as technology convergence, Internet development and universal service.
Considering the importance and the global scale of the Plenipotentiary Conference, the organization by Romania of the 21st edition of the Conference in 2022 is an opportunity to strengthen the regional and international influence of our country in a very important and dynamic field, which brings about political, diplomatic, economic and social benefits. The conference usually takes place over a minimum of three weeks during which more than two thousand delegates participate in the sessions hosted by the organizing Member State.
