Romania s candidacy for hosting the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2022 (PP-22) endorsed by ITU Council

In the 2019 Council session of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), held in Geneva from 10 to 20 June 2019, ANCOM’s President, Sorin Grindeanu, presented Romania’s candidacy for hosting the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2022 (PP-22), which was endorsed by the ITU Council member states. ”It is a great honour for us to receive the support of the ITU Council member states, reflecting the confidence that Romania enjoys in the IT&C sector at a global level. The organization of the most important ITU Conference in 2022 (PP-22) will strengthen the regional and international influence of our country in a very important and dynamic field, bringing about political, diplomatic, economic and social benefits”, declared Sorin Grindeanu, President of ANCOM.
 
Romania’s candidacy was approved by Memorandum in Government session, on 4 April 2019, andwas submitted by official letter to the ITU General Secretary.
The host country of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference is designated following a two-stage process: in this first stage, Romania has been granted the unanimous consent of 48 ITU Council members. Next, the Secretary-General of the Union will consult all 193 ITU member states on the organization of PP-22 in Bucharest.
 
ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2022
According to the ITU Constitution, the Plenipotentiary Conference is the supreme decision-making body of the Union and has the role of adopting ITU's overall policy, strategic and financial plans and choosing its leadership (the ITU Council as mandated by the Plenipotentiary Conference, the Secretary-General, the Director of the Radiocommunications Bureau, the Director of the Standardization Bureau, and the Director of the Development Bureau). During this event, the future of the organization as a whole is decided, as well as its ability to influence various IT&C related trends, such as technology convergence, Internet development and universal service.
The 21st edition of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, organised in 2022, will be held for three weeks and will bring together more than two thousand participants, including heads of government, ministers and other delegates from the 193 ITU member states, as well as representatives of major IT&C companies, of academia and of the national, regional and international bodies in the field.
