Using telephone networks in an earthquake

28.12.2016

Telephone networks have a limited call management capacity. In emergency, a sudden raise in the number of calls may trigger network congestion and, in extreme cases, even network blocking.

How can one help avoiding telephony network blocking in emergency situations?
  • call only in genuine emergencies;
  • make calls as short as possible;
  • send text messages (SMS);
  • use your mobile internet, Wi-fi or mobile messaging (send instant messages over online platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter etc. or e-mail messages);
  • if your family or friends are outside the damaged area, ask one of them to send the others information on your situation; thus, you will make one instead of multiple calls.
In exceptional situations (e.g. earthquake, fire, flooding) priority must be given to emergency calls, such as calls to the emergency number 112.

Calls made for discussing what happened or any other aspects than an emergency contribute to congesting telephony networks.

112 is the single European telephone number for emergency calling in case or fire, accident, medical emergency, disaster and other events that require rapid intervention from the specialized services (Police, Gendarmerie, Ambulance, Fire Brigade, the SMURD)..
