Choose the appropriate offer
Presently, in Romania, the end-users have several options for receiving television programmes. Beyond the ”old” individual or collective antenna on top of the roof, now the providers offer a broad range of technological solutions.
Thus, you can choose among analogue cable TV, digital cable TV, DTH TV (direct-to-home or via satellite) or IPTV (based on sending the TV signal with high image and sound quality, by means of Internet Protocols, directly onto your TV screen).
When you are making a choice, you must take into account both the benefits and the challenges of these technologies as regards the number of channels received, the image/ sound quality, the amount of the monthly subscription and the service coverage.
For example, IPTV allows you to receive a larger number of TV channels than cable TV or a satellite dish, with a higher sound/ image quality, as well as to access additional functions (e.g. re-running the TV programmes for the past 24 hours, an electronic programme guide, the possibility of accessing online games or of ordering various pay-per-view movies or TV programmes - video on demand). On the other hand, this technology is currently rather sparsely spread in Romania.
Moreover, there are some areas where, due to the geographical configuration or to the remoteness of certain localities, only satellite TV is accessible.
Last but not least, you should take into account the fact that the latest general trend is replacing analogue with digital TV, which would provide a set of advantages: access to a wider range of channels, better image and sound quality, lower costs.
What does one have to pay attention to when choosing the television service? Mainly, you should check the following:
- the TV channels you are interested in and the providers that include them in their offers; Warning! Analyse the offers: some channels are part of programme packages that are charged in addition to the standard subscription; furthermore, many providers offer the television service within a service package that may include also telephony and internet. Pick the offer that suits you best!
- whether the chosen service is available in your area;
- the tariffs: the connection/installation fees, the amount of the monthly flat rate and whether this is bound to the purchase of a certain service package, the tariff for additional equipment usage/lease (as applicable);
- the technical specifications of the service (e.g. image and/or sound quality);
- if you intend to use more than one TV set, check the relevant conditions, based on the technology used and on the contractual terms;
- the service activation/ installation term;
- trouble notification and remedy term;
- the minimum contract duration and the applicable early termination fees;
- the compensations you are entitled to if the provider breaches the contract;
- service suspension/ reconnection terms, as well as the applicable tariffs.
