Watch out for the extension of your telephony, internet or television contract

11.04.2016

Contracts for telephony, internet or television services are usually extended, by default, either for successive periods equal to the initial contract duration, or for an indefinite period, without requiring further steps from the users or the providers.
Warning! The operators may offer the users additional benefits upon extension (e.g. discounted equipment or tariff plans), which usually triggers concluding an addendum and the beginning of a new minimum contract period. If a user wishes to terminate the contract sooner than the expiry term of this new contract period, the provider may claim the payment of early termination fees.
If a contract is extended by default (either for an indefinite period, or for a period equal to the initial period or to another determined period), while the offer is preserved and no equipment is bought at discount price, the users will not pay any termination fees associated to a minimum contract period, given the fact that this period has expired. Thus, the telephony, internet or television service will be provided as long as neither the user nor the provider takes any steps for terminating the contract.
According to ANCOM President’s Decision no.158/2015 on the providers’ obligations to inform the end-users,the providers must publish on their websites information on the duration of contracts for the provision of telephony, internet and television services, presented in an accurate, detailed and understandable manner. The users may find further details on the contracts concluded with the providers and on the information they have the obligation to publish on their websites, in the InfoCentre section on ANCOM’s website.
On what, how and where to complain
If you have concluded a contract that does not specify if and how it can be extended, ANCOM may take measures. Check how you can send a complaint in our section Complain to ANCOM!

You have the right to be notified 30 days before the contract is automatically extended, for you to express your validity extension option. If you have not received this notification, you can address the National Authority for Consumer Protection.
